Fourteen

Logan. Oh, shit. Logan.

Goddamn it, Malcolm was right. We should have seen this coming. To him, women were only good for sex and breeding. Even I wasn’t more than a freak of nature. Sons were what counted. If Malcolm wanted to hurt Clay, he wouldn’t go after our daughter.

As Clay talked to Jeremy, I called Reese. After four rings, it went to his voice mail. I left a message and then texted, telling him to call me right away.

“It’s past midnight,” Clay said when I told him. “He’s just asleep. Keep dialing. Jeremy’s contacting the others, seeing who’s closest.”

We were, as it turned out. By the time Jeremy phoned back, we could see the lights of the cabin. I tried to break into a sprint, but Clay grabbed my arm and held me back. In other words: don’t go running pell-mell toward the cabin, because we might be walking into a trap.

We slowed to a fast walk. When I did, I called Reese again. I could hear his phone ringing inside the cabin.

“He’s not sleeping through that,” I said. “Not after five calls. Not both him and Logan.”

“I know,” Clay said grimly.

We looped around until we could see the front porch. The front door stood open. I rocked forward, ready to run, but stopped myself before Clay had to.

“Cover me,” he said.

I nodded. He proceeded toward the door. I walked backwards behind him, peering into the night, listening and, most of all, sniffing, making sure no one snuck up while his attention was focused on that open door.

We reached it without incident. Everything was silent, inside and out. I crouched at the porch but picked up no scent. I was about to say so when I caught one in the air. I followed it to the front window.

It was a light scent, there on the sill, as if the intruder had his gloves off and touched it when he peered inside. And I say “intruder” not “Malcolm” because it wasn’t his scent. I motioned Clay over. He sniffed the spot and shook his head. No one he knew. Definitely werewolf, though. I’d been wrong. Malcolm had someone with him. Not a partner, but flunkies. Wolves willing to do his bidding. Foreign wolves, if neither Clay nor I recognized their scent.

The Bulgarian Pack. They’d insisted they weren’t sheltering him. They just didn’t want us on their land looking for him. We’d always wondered if they were lying. Now I was sure of it. Malcolm had recruited a few to help him clear the way for his return.

As we returned to the front door, Karl drove up. Hope got out first. I left Clay in the open doorway and jogged over.

Before I could say a word, Hope reach up and wrapped her arms around me. I embraced her back and said, “Thanks for coming.”

“Of course.” She squeezed my arm. “It’ll be okay. Malcolm’s not stupid enough to hurt them.”

And that was, perhaps, the most sensible and reassuring thing anyone had said so far.
